Scalp eczema is pretty common because the skin of the scalp differs from the rest of the body. The scalp has a supply of grease and oil from the sebaceous glands and the hair follicles. Hence scalp eczema is also known as “Seborrhoeic dermatitis”. The eczema may be pink or red in color, with fine peeling or flaking of the surface.
Seborrhoeic Eczema affects the greasy parts of the body (referred as the “T-Zone” of the face) such as:
You may see eczema rashes on the armpits, the upper back and chest. ( Commonly seen at the time of puberty when the oil producing glands of the body becomes hyper active under hormonal changes). What causes scalp Eczema is not known but it could be because of an overgrowth of yeast called Malassezia (aka Pityrosporum ovale).

Seborrhoeic dermatitis may predispose to psoriasis. But, the plaques of psoriasis are more persistent, thicker, and a deep red colour, with large flakes of white scale. Psoriasis can affect elbows, knees and the scalp. (sebopsoriasis – when you can’t distinguish between eczema and psoriasis )
Scalp Eczema is not contagious or related to diet, but it may be aggravated by illness, psychological stress, fatigue, change of season and reduced general health.

When shampooing, massage your scalp and do not scratch it. Rinse your hair well – ideally twice with every shampoo. The scalp is very sensitive, so take care with hair products that can dry and irritate it.
Change your usual shampoo with a dandruff shampoo. If you find the flakes are returning, don’t panic, just switch to a new shampoo. Make sure your diet contains enough vitamin E, selenium and zinc. Flaxseed oil is also said to help prevent dandruff and can be taken in liquid or capsule form.
