Melanoma Skin Cancer – Symptoms Causes Treatment

Melanoma skin cancer is caused due to the effect of ultraviolet radiations. People over the age of 40 are more susseptible to this. But now a days young guys are getting lots of ultraviolet exposure (due to sunlight or tanning salons) that can end up with skin cancer. Almost 79% of skin cancer deaths are due to this.

People working indoors are more prone to Melanoma skin cancer becuase lot of body areais not exposed to the Sun and when they go outside – they expose the skin to uv rays excessively. If we look at the Melanoma skin cancer statistics, the old guys who are suffering frm this, the root cause can be traced to behaviours as young adults.

For melanomas the treatment could be removing the tumour surgically before it spreads. By removing more tissue around the tumour (the margin), the surgeon is more likely to remove the beginning of any spread and increase the chance of a cure.

Once a melanoma spreads across the body – the chances of cure are less and treatment could take much much longer time.

Every year more than a million cases are diagnosed with Melanoma skin cancer in US and more than two million worldwide.

Melanoma skin cancer is observed in less people than non-melanoma type of cancer. But it is even more dangerous.

Melanoma comes from pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. These cells are just beneath the skin’s outer surface (epidermis). Melanocytes can break away from a melanoma tumor to grow, multiply and spread elsewhere in the body. Cell mutations are genetic defects that may play a part in melanoma.

Spread Of Melanoma Skin Cancer

• The disease starts as a sore or lump that develops a scab and does not heal.
• You can see a flat red or brownish patch on the skin that is scaly and might itch.
• Sometimes patch is shiny, pale, or waxy lump.

Treatment of Melanoma Skin Cancer

1. A patient will undergo a complete skin examination.
2. If skin inspection identifies areas that are suspicious for cancer, a physician will conduct a biopsy to remove a sample of the tissue for further examination.
3. A biopsy allows the doctor to decide on the presence of cancer.
4. Shave biopsy-a razor is used to shave off the abnormal area.
5. Punch biopsy-a circle of tissue is removed from the abnormal area using a special instrument.
6. Excisional biopsy-a scalpel is used to remove the abnormal area.

Remember – Using tanning beds or sunlamps too much can be the reason. The disorder may happen in areas that get the most sun expore like – your head, neck, back chest or shoulders.
