Skin discoloration is because of loss of skin pigment also known as melanin. A person suffering from hypopigmentation has lighter skin color compared to the normal skin color. For examples – Vitiligo and Tinea Versicolor. Hyperpigmentation caused due to the presence of overactive melanocytes, which eventually increases the melanin production. Overexposure to sunlight also causes hyperpigmentation.

Skin discoloration is caused by dead cells, using a treatment such as alpha hydroxy acids may help. It removes dead or old cells faster and can also help lighten up age spots as well. You can increase your intake of foods that contain folic acid. Foods rich in folic acid include:

  • Liver
  • Oats

Discoloration can be found in any location on the body and many times occurs under the eyes. Often referred to as infraorbital discoloration, it has also been described as “dark circles”. Discolorationunder the eye usually follows the anatomy of the orbicularis oculi muscle, which surrounds the orbital area. Because dark circle discoloration most typically follows the muscle surrounding the orbital area, it has most often been attributed to hyperpigmentation.

This is a skin condition that results to loss of skin pigments which is why it is characterized by light or pale spots on the skin. The spots are irregular in shape and can definitely spread to any part of the body including your face, scalp and soles of your feet.

Skin discoloration is mainly seen on the face or extremities. As the pigmentation of the skin is directly related to the circulation of the blood, blood that is not properly oxygenated can give a bluish appearance to the skin. Blood that gives a bluish appearance to the skin may be the result of blocked air passages, diseased lungs, or poor circulation, for example, as a result of heart disease.

Skin discoloration is that regardless of the cause; be it due to old acne, bug bites, skin trauma, underarm irritation, sun damage (such as freckles, “liver spots) or hormonal reasons (melasma); your bleaching basics remain the same. Currently the fda only recognizes hydroquinone as a “bleaching agent”. That means that many other ingredients incorporated into products must be referred to as lighteners, brighteners or whiteners. If you do not have well defined areas to bleach, or have widespread freckling, you will want to select a skin brightener that is safer to use in more widespread areas. Avoid applying the bleaching product to normal surrounding skin. Continued use of your bleach on normal skin will slowly lighten the regular skin tone, too.

Skin discoloration is caused by an excess or reduction regarding the melanin in the skin. Because melanin’s purpose in our skin is protect us from harmful ultraviolet (uv) light, it makes sense that sun exposure can often be associated with pigmentation and discoloration problems.

Consult a dermatologist for medical help. The doctor may suggest use of a topical cream to reduce the discoloration. Use the cream on a portion of your skin to check for any irritation, only then apply to the entire area. Folic acid is found in abundance in leafy vegetables, whole wheat, oats and barley. These are a good source of vitamin b, and helps in keeping the skin healthy. Consult your doctor first before experimenting with your skin with any medications. It keeps the skin supple and soft and keeps away from drying.
