Corticosteroids are in use for the treating skin diseases and skin rashes including
- Eczema
- Keloids
- Lichen Sclerosus

Corticosteroids are very effective in treating skin rashes due to allergies or inflammatory reactions to poison ivy, metals, cloth or other substances. Cortico steroids are prescribed medicines but few low potency topical creams can be bought over-the-counter (OTC). Corticosteroids are available in the following three forms:

The main side effects of steriod include a loss of bone density, thinning of the skin. Do not take without consulting doctor.
Corticosteroids are very effective in treating eczema. Make sure that dermatologist experienced enough in prescribing them. I have suffered from eczema for lot of years. Nothing worked including ayurvedic neem cream treatment. Suprisingly 1% hydrocortisone oinment worked well.
Dermatologists usually start with topical GCS therapy – extrenal treatment. The medicine is availabe in the following forms.
- Corticosteroid treatments clear small skin rashes in two to three days.
- Use it only for few days to clear the rash.
- High potency topical corticosteroids treatment can last upto ten days
- Low to medium strength corticosteroid treatment can last two to three weeks.
Potential Side Effects of Corticosteroids
- Cataracts
- clouding of the eyes
- Gastrointestinal effects like nausea and vomiting
- Glaucoma an eye disease
- Growth retardation
- Hypertension
- Infection skin rashes and irritation
- Osteoporosis a loss of bone density or bone thinning
- Skin effects including stretch marks and spider veins
- Tachyphylaxis or a decreasing response to corticosteroids
- Weight gain
