Common lupus Erythematosus skin rash is redness on the cheeks aka Malar Blush. It is often caused by exposure to Sun mainly in whites. There are many types of lupus rashes.

Types of Lupus Skin Rashes

Discoid lupus

  • Red skin patches on the skin and scaliness
  • Less serious form of the disease
  • Occurs on the face and scalp and may lead to loss of scalp hair aka alopecia
  • Known to be itchy

Acute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus

  • Butterfly shaped distribution on the face
  • Found on the both cheeks and across the nose bridge
  • Increases by exposure to sunlight or artificial UV light

Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus

  • Lesions may be local or spread all over the body
  • Generally occur after exposure to the sun
  • It may involve any place on the body,
  • Rash could be circular with scaly patches

Chronic Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus

  • Occurs on face, scalp and ears, but it could occur anywhere on the body

Lupus Panniculitis

  • Lesion is situated below the skin in the subcutaneous tissue
  • Heals with a deep atrophy of the affected skin area

Bullous Lupus Erythematosus

  • Present as blisters with a clear seurous fluid
  • Blisters range from three to 40 mm in diameter
  • The rash appears in sun exposed areas

Neonatal Lupus

  • Seen in newborn babies

Systemic Lupus

  • More severe form of the autoimmune illness affecting the skin, joints and in some cases important organs of the body such as the heart and kidneys.

  3. Steroid tablets and or injections – Last resort. Many side effects of steroids hence not recommended.
  4. Homeopathic treatment – Some patients respond better to these treatments. Time consuming.
