The bacteria are usually spread when infected secretions come in contact with the mouth, nose, or eyes of an uninfected person. They can also enter the body through a cut or scrape.

Symptoms appear quickly, usually within one to three days. The infection is diagnosed by testing a culture of the organism in a laboratory. ( rapid strep tests are also available)
