Sunlight contains invisible but detrimental ultraviolet rays. When skin is exposed to the sun for long, the upper skin layer can be damaged.
Sunburn is caused due to the radiation of the sun. For this reason a it can even occur on a cloudy day. A combustion of the skin is not directly visible and when the skin becomes red and painful, damage has been already caused. For this reason it is advisale to be always careful in the sun.
The degree of burnout depends of the skin type and quantifty of exposure to ultraviolet light. A fair skin is more sensitive to sunburn than dark because a dark skin has more melanine. Melanine is a brown pigment that is a natural protection for skin against sunlight. Also a child skin burns easily compared to an adult.

Sunburn is characterised by a red, painful skin which senses warmly and can itch. There are several gradations of sunburn exist, varying from a superficial mild burn to a serious crimson skin with blisters. The pain at a sunburn is between six to 48 hours after exhibition to the sun. After some days the skin generally peels. Sunburn generally arises on parts of the body which are not exposed normally to the sun such as the arm, legs, back and abdomen. Moreover it is possible by regular and too long exposure to the sun – the skin more rapidly becomes obsolete and might lead to skin cancer.
During sunbathing do not be in the sun for too long. Avoid 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM during daytime – stay in shade. During this time of the day, the sunbeams are the most powerful. Sunburn can be also prevented by covering the skin, for example with clothing or a towel, and by carrying head covering and sunglasses.
The best protection against sunbeams is suntan lotion. It stop the sunlight, absorb detrimental radiation. It is available in the forms like cream, lotion and lip balm.
Suntan lotions are available in several forms. Check the protection factor on packing . Higher the figure is, higer protection. People with a light, sensitive skin need a higher protection factor. Apply the creme or lotion befor 30 to 50 minutes before sunbath. Use it during swimming, sailng or windsurfing. Prefer waterproof lotion.
At holidays, in the area where the sun is very strong, extra care should be taken because it can spoil holiday.
In case of a light sunburn the treatment is take bath as soon as possible or take shower with lukewarm water. Go in the shade and apply moisturiser. Use suntan lotion.
If the sunburn is serious, this means if the skin very painful and blisters have arisen. Consult a doctor. Do not puncture the blisters in any case. Young children and baby’s have an extra vulnerable skin. Do not let them out in violent sunlight.
